Winner of the In-house Lawyer of the Year Award 2017 donates DKK 75,000 to Save the Children
DONG Energy's Group Legal was awarded the In-house Lawyer of the Year Award 2017 at a ceremony hosted by Kromann Reumert last week. Established on the initiative of Kromann Reumert and the Danish Association of In-house Lawyers, the award aims to promote the value of in-house lawyers to Danish businesses.
Peter Istrup, Chairman of the Association of In-house Lawyers, Assistant General Counsel, Head of Legal International at Arla Foods amba and member of the Prize Committee gave the following reason for the Committee’s decision: “DONG Energy’s Group Legal has played an important part in DONG Energy's current shift away from fossil fuels to renewable energy. The group’s transformation has involved, and continues to involve, a number of commercial projects, including the divestment of business activities, most recently the sale of DONG Energy’s oil and gas business, and major investments in offshore wind energy. This work shows how a competent in-house legal department can play a decisive role in implementing an overall group strategy.”
Erik Bertelsen, Partner, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Kromann Reumert and Chairman of the Prize Committee continued: “DONG Energy’s Group Legal has been a major factor in the preparation and implementation of very large projects, including the successful stock market flotation of DONG Energy which was the largest IPO in Danish history and one of the largest in the world in 2016. The preparation of the IPO involved a number of parallel projects, intended to make the organisation ready for life as a listed company. These legal projects were managed by DONG Energy’s Group Legal."
Anders Zoëga Hansen, General Counsel at DONG Energy said after receiving the prize: “I am very happy to receive the In-house Lawyer of the Year Award 2017. The DONG Energy group has undergone a number of far-reaching and complex processes. Group Legal has handled the extensive work with a high degree of commercial and legal insight and expertise while at the same time continuing its assistance to the other business areas that are all characterised by complex legal issues.”
DKK 75,000 to Save the Children’s fight against famine in Somalia
Anders Zoëga Hansen explained that DONG Energy’s Group Legal has decided to donate the prize of DKK 75,000 to Save the Children for the following reason: “A new study by Save the Children shows an alarming increase in the number of undernourished children in drought-stricken Somalia. Climate changes have contributed to reduced rainfall in the area. At the same time, temperatures are rising, thus increasing evaporation and threatening the lives of all those who live by their own crop and livestock. 75% of all livestock in Somalia has already died, many water reserves are almost empty, and diseases such as cholera have started spreading. We want to support Save the Children’s huge efforts to treat malnutrition, hand out drinking water in villages, and offer medical assistance.”
Kromann Reumert and the Association of In-house Lawyers congratulate Anders Zoëga Hansen and all members of DONG Energy’s Group Legal on winning the prize!
The In-house Lawyer of the Year Award
An increasing number of Danish businesses are setting up in-house legal departments, and many businesses are expanding their existing departments. As this trend progresses, Denmark's in-house lawyers play an increasingly strategic and value-adding role.
The In-house Lawyer of the Year Award was established on the initiative of the Danish Association of In-house Lawyers and Kromann Reumert to draw attention to the value of in-house lawyers to Danish businesses. Today, Danish businesses have to cope with increased regulation and an increasing number of requirements. In-house legal departments or lawyers are therefore no longer confined to large international groups since even small businesses may need qualified legal assistance. The increasing number of in-house lawyers contributes to professionalising the Danish business community.
The prize was first awarded at the 2014 general meeting of the Association of In-house Lawyers where the winner was ISS’ legal team. Last year, the award went to Mette Valentin, Senior Vice President, Legal and Public Affairs at Scandinavian Tobacco Group.
